The Explorer zero emission microyacht

Small enough to row yet sea-worthy enough to go off-shore - thanks to the unique swing bulb keel, designed by Mukti Mitchell and nominated for Innovative Boat of the Year at the British Marine Awards

The challenge...

To create the smallest, most affordable yacht capable and safe for cruising with no engine.  To be light enough to row, sea-worthy enough for the British coast, with a stability curve that would look after you.  To be pretty to see, a joy to sail, and to to have the lowest possible visual impact to the sailor so that most of their field of vision is the boundless, beautiful sea.

Exciting results

Thanks to the help and advice of 82 people including yachts designers, naval engineers and my mother, the boat was far more than I ever could have achieved on my own. She received wide coverage in the yachting press, a fantastic boat test review from Practical Boat Owner Magazine and was nominated for Innovative Boat of the Year 2005 at the British Marine Awards.  She had a stability curve close to the Contessa 32 being self-righting from 135 degrees and took little water during capsize trials.  At sea she sailed overnight through the Irish Sea in a force 7 with 12 foot waves out of radio range on a 60 mile passage to the Isle of Mann.  A joy to sail and live aboard for 6 months around Britain, thanks to having no engine noise I could hear the porpoises coming up to breathe so saw them every day from Devon to Scotland.
